Rivers Condition in India

India, a land of myths, beliefs, and superstitions, have thousands of reasons to worship demigods. There are several scriptures which clearly depicts the presence of some supernatural powers. And from those scriptures, we have rivers which are meant to be worshipped. And Yes! Rivers are really meant to be worshipped. But our way of worshipping them is much a daunting task.

India is the home to the majestic peaks of Himalaya and the Himalaya is the originating point of some of the biggest Rivers like Yamuna, Ganga, and Brahmaputra. All of them have a great ambiance in the holy scriptures of India. They are the lifeline of Indian civilization. Perhaps, on a very harsh note, they are going through a very severe condition.

Are Rivers Meant to be worshipped?

Quite a few weeks ago, I was dipping in my Facebook feeds and there I came across to a post, which was stating the condition of Rivers in two countries, one in which the rivers are the subject of the Holy mantras – India and in the other one, Rivers are just a source of water supplies and for other transportation.

Let me tell you, how this thing housed in my heart. On my recent excursion, Yamunotri Pass (or the Bali Pass), me with my teammates reaching towards our first campsite in Taluka. After crossing Mussoorie, we reached a point where a stream of water falling from the top of a mountain, making its way to the river which is fiercely following through the valley.

We stopped at that point and decided to take a bath under that stream (after getting tired from the last night traveling). Bumped out of my curiosity, I asked to my trek leader “Sir, which river is this?” And after listening to the answer, I literally gave it a stunning shot. He said, “It is River Yamuna”.

The river was unpolluted at all, the waters in the river were as clear as a crystal, and foremost it was flowing in a very fiercely as well as decently. “Ye Yamuna Ji hai?” these were the words which came out from my mouth. Because the River that I have seen in Agra, Delhi or Mathura, have a very drastic condition. Also, River Yamuna is now on the top of the list of most polluted rivers in India. The water is as black as the Kohl.

The Statement

Now the statement that made by that man of the mountains changed my whole mindset about the rivers. He said “that’s the problem with us people, we worship Rivers as they could wipe out our misdeeds. And it is one of the problems which are polluting these sources of freshwater. We think that they are the goddesses which keep us free from all the delusions and we kept them polluting by throwing our ‘worship-matter-things’”.

That was the day which put me into a whole new world of myths and beliefs. And after giving much thought on the words of that man, I found out that he was somewhere correct. We people are the only beings who are gradually giving harm to our freshwater sources. We throw our waste material which came out from our daily worship processings (sorry, I literally don’t mean to hurt anyone’s sentiments but honestly they are the Waste Material, nothing much nothing less). Because once it gets used, it automatically falls under waste-material things.

The Toxicity

Also, there are several things which are continuously providing harm to our rivers and we are the only people who are providing harm to those incredible sources of water. And I don’t want to put myself into any controversy by stating out the major cause of water pollution. You all people are big enough to get the point.

Appeal

Last but not the least, here is one thing PLEASE DO NOT THINK THAT THE RIVERS WILL ACCEPT ANY KIND OF OUR MATERIAL NO MATTER IT WILL BE THE DIYAS OR ANY KIND OF THING THAT WE USE IN OUR DAY TO DAY WORSHIP.
